ANSWERS

ANSWERS

1-2. The two portions of the Pituitary Gland are the Anterior and the Posterior Pituitary Gland.
3-4. An example of a hormone secreted by the Posterior Pituitary Gland are Oxytocin and Vasopressin (ADH).
5-6. (Explain Vasopressin and Oxytocin)
  • Vasopressin helps the kidneys conserve the correct amount of water in the body to regulate urine excretion.
  • Oxytocin is responsible for stimulating the contractions of the smooth muscles in the uterus when giving birth and is also responsible for producing milk in the mammary glands.
7. Other names for ADH are; Vasopressin, Argipressin or Arginine Vasopressin (AVP).
8. ADH = Anti Diuretic Hormone
9. Excess amount of ADH may cause Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH).
10. Insufficient amount of ADH may cause Diabetes Insipidus.

11-15.

Jorjina a 25 year old girl complains that she was always thirsty and that she was urinating very often. She also said that she had a bike accident bumping head first on the ground but she did not feel anything afterwards .

There was no sign of bleeding. What would be the most probable cause of her symptoms? What would be the probable diagnosis for Jorjina?

  • Excessive thirst and urine production may be a cause of Diabetes Insipidus. Also, her bike accident could have her brain injured and brain injury can cause Diabetes Insipidus. Jorjina developed Diabetes Insipidus through brain injury. The diagnosis for jorjina was Diabetes Insipidus through brain injury.
16-20.

Kimdrew a 45 year old construction worker who is a chain smoker complains about having seizures. He also stated that sometimes he is irritable and has personality changes.

Other symptoms of kimdrew were nausea and vomiting. What would be the cause of the said symptoms? What would be the diagnosis of the 45 year old construction worker?

  • Kimdrew may have developed Lung cancer through smoking. These cancer produces Anti Diuretic Hormone (ADH). Production of ADH by the cancer may cause excessive ADH. An excessive ADH level is diagnosed by SIADH (Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion). Also, other symptoms of SIADH were nausea, vomiting, irritability, personality changes, such as combativeness, confusion, and hallucinations, seizures, coma and many more. The Diagnosis of the patient was SIADH which was caused by Lung cancer.

POSTERIOR PITUITARY GLAND

The Posterior Pituitary Gland also called as nuerohypophysis comprises the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland and is part of the endocrine system. There are three regions of the posterior pituitary, the posterior lobe which constitutes the majority of the posterior pituitary, the infundibular stalk or also known as the “infundibulum” or “pituitary stalk” and the median eminence which is occasionally included as part of the posterior pituitary.

According to different sources the Posterior Pituitary Gland is not a Gland, instead it is just a mere collection of large axonal projections from the hyphothalamus.

HORMONES OF THE POSTERIOR PITUITARY

There are 2 major hormones released by the Posterior Pituitary;

Oxytocin stimulates the contractions of the smooth muscle in the uterus during the last stage of pregnancy to motivate the ejection of the fetus and also responsible for producing milk in the mammary glands of women after giving birth

Vasopressin or also known as the Anti Diuretic Hormone (ADH) helps the kidneys conserve the correct amount of water in the body to regulate urine exretion.

DISORDERS OF THE POSTERIOR PITUITARY

Insufficient amount of ADH may lead to Diabetes Insipidus.
Excess amount of ADH may lead to
Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH).
